are you really surprised?

OK, Colin Powell has endorsed Barack Obama… If you are a sentient being, this should not be a surprise to you. Powell was made a scapegoat for one for one of the greatest blunders in modern US history. By people who he, at least at one time, called friends. An accomplished son of the Bronx, Powell spent decades building his legacy. Only to have it torn down with a presentation to the UN. Powell makes it no secret where he stands on the Iraq war:

In July 2007 Powell revealed that he spent two and a half hours trying to persuade George W. Bush not to invade Iraq but that he did not prevail. At the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado Powell stated, “I tried to avoid this war. I took him [Bush] through the consequences of going into an Arab country and becoming the occupiers.”

So, are you really surprised?

“Colin Powell, the first African-American Secretary of State, said this afternoon that electing an African-American US president would be “electrifying” for the world” — Nope, I’m not surprised.

Powell’s (and Mcain’s) fatal flaw was/is loyalty to their Party over Country/World.

I supported the war – but not just because of the WMD threats – but because the 1st Bush (& the U.N) didn’t finish the Job the first time. The error in judgment of us supporters was really not recognizing the incompetence of Bush & his cronies. I agree with Mcain on this – the management was bad, not the war itself – but it will take a true intellect like Obama to bring it to a close while juggling the economy, health etc. (I hope).

@xrelix: Agreed… This should have been handled fully during the Gulf War. I think McCain’s been politically hurt by two things: his age, and his having kowtowed, in such an obvious way to his party.

This has been, and will continue to be an interesting election.
