Starting an OpenLaszlo Project

I started looking at RIA development not too long ago. So, as always, the only obvious next step was to build an RIA app. I didn’t actually start from scratch… I have an app I am developing using WebWork-2.4, Hibernate-3.2, Spring-2.x and others. Being that the aforementioned libraries all come with their own dependencies, adding OpenLaszlo was not as easy as I thought.

After 2 days of googling and forum searching various terms, I was able to resolve the errors. First off, if you use JDOM, make sure that you have at least JDOM-1.0.1 — the latest version that shipped with OpenLaszlo 4.0. Also, as this post makes clear, specifying the XML Factories removes the compilation errors I experienced. After that, it was smooth sailing.

Nerdiness

I was looking at Ruminations of a Programmer, and saw this thing on the side. I had to look up the symbol for Mn on the periodic table, which surprised me… I should have known that. Luckily, this quiz accounts for that.

I am nerdier than 91% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Adobe’s Flex 2

Adobe’s Flex 2 seems like the realization of some great RAD concepts. I’ve seen this for MS related products: Access, VB, etc. However, it’s my first time seeing it for a clean rich Internet application UI. The fact that you can use it along w/ Eclipse is pretty attractive. If ya have 12 minutes, check out this demo.

Some guy built a Commodore C64 Emulator. Here’s a screenshot below — you can actually play the games. If your interested, check some of the other projects Flex Derby developers built — for some contest Adobe held. Pretty slick!

The Cost/Benefit Ratio for Home Theater Systems

When I initially looked for a home theater system, I was not interested in spending too much money. So, I went on the cheap w/ some Koss system from Sears. Wow — that was a horrible choice.

In general, it was ok. However, with a maximum output of 300 watts, it could never really perform. I know an audio enthusiast would have know this ahead of time, but I didn’t. Later, I found myself changing the decibel level of the center channel based on whatever I was watching. After about 2 years of visiting friends homes and noticing they never had to change settings to get reasonable sound, I knew I had to make a change.

Now, being the miser that I am, I wasn’t about to purchase a Klipsch or Bose system. However, there are a few reasonably priced Phillips and Sony systems out there. I searched a bit and found this great Phillips system. 1000 watts, as you might assume, is a remarkable jump. All of a sudden, all media comes through without fiddling. Things like disruption on sudden loud sounds — gone. Also, I didn’t have the ability to read data of USB drives. That’s a nice addition. I noticed this system had 2 real settings: stereo or Dolby Pro Logic II (Dolby Digital, DTS – basically multichannel). The Koss system had these 2 and 5 other crap settings, that tried to hide the poor audio handling.

Well, I always knew if you bought an inexpensive system, it would only be a holdover for a more performant one. Now I don’t really want to go through all this for a flat screen tv… we’ll see how that works out.

lessons learned

Today is my last day at my current company. It was an interesting experience. I met some good people, and learned a lot about myself. I learned what kind of Engineer I was, and what I couldbe. I learned that I am a (mild) workaholic. I learned that enthusiasm does not equal success. I learned that assumptions really do make an ass of me. I learned I dont like cocaine… Just kidding, I love it. Ok, that was a joke; or was it?

In all seriousness, the greatest lesson of all was that I had to experience some negatives now so I could better handle or avoid them in the future. All in all, I appreciate this past oppurtunity, and look forward to my next.

Bribing Bloggers?

In Joel Spolsky’s most recent post, Bribing Bloggers, he states that even if a blogger discloses that they have received the item they are blogging about as a gift, that:

“the only conclusion I can come to is that this is ethically indistinguishable from bribery. Even if no quid-pro-quo is formally required, the gift creates a social obligation of reciprocity.”

He then goes on to reference Dr. Cialdini’s Influence. while I agree with most of the post, disclosure along with objectivity is exactly what makes the difference. Within the same summary Joel references, Dr Cialdini states that “The best defense against manipulation by the use of the Rule of Reciprocity to gain compliance is not the total rejection of initial offers by others. But rather, accepting initial favors or concessions in good faith, while also remaining prepared to see through them as tricks–should they later be proven so. Once they are seen in this way, there is no longer a need to feel the necessity to respond with a favor or concession.”

In the end, when writing, if need be, insert a disclosure. Either way, the reader should be cognizant of the context, and responsible enough to look for more than one opinion. Joel doesnt give the Vista a favorable review. Free laptop or not, would he have responded differently? I doubt it.

Sacrifice

If you have the time, I strongly recommend watching this editorial on the current state of President Bush’s Iraq policy. It’s 10 minutes of some honesty, that I doubt the president will actually hear… However, I do hope that some people around him do.

One of the biggest surprises is Senator McCain. What the heck happened there? This same guy was pushed out of running by the suggestion that he fathered a black child out of wed-lock (it was his adopted son). Great work Karl Rove, et al. Did McCain’s soul disapate over the past year?! Oh Well.
